First digital archive issues now available

The 1911 issues of The Southern Guardian are now available to read online, by clicking "The Southern Guardian 1911 Archives" link on the Arkansas Catholic homepage.

The first volume of The Southern Guardian has completed scanning, and every issue from the year 1911 is now available to read online.

The high-resolution scanned images, part of a long-term project supported by gifts to Arkansas Catholic's Guardian Angels campaign, have been processed for quick loading on any Web browser. View the images on this link: The Southern Guardian 1911 Archives.

The first volume received "white glove" handling to prevent damage, smooth creases when possible and piece broken pages together. In this first phase of digital archiving, scanning the pages captures the history contained in the pages, preserving it from further loss. Developing search functions, cataloging and indexing will require months of additional work.

Later volumes, from 1912 to 2001, will be scanned as funding becomes available. Donor "angels" have given $11,955 through March 18, 2011, reaching 79 percent of the first-year goal of $15,000 in Arkansas Catholic's first Guardian Angels campaign. Although the first-year Guardian Angels campaign officially ended with the newspaper's 100th anniversary March 25, gifts are still welcome and will still count toward the goal.
