A photo of a stained glass window shining over votive candles at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Booneville, taken by Elaine Jones of Sherwood, won first place in Arkansas Catholic’s annual photo contest and will appear on the cover of the 2015 Catholic Diocese of Little Rock Directory.

Jones will receive photographer’s credit in the directory, a one-year subscription to Arkansas Catholic and a copy of the directory.

Second place in the contest was won by James L. Nowell of North Little Rock, who submitted his photo of “the quad” at Subiaco Abbey.

Judy Peters of Hot Springs and Paul McGuyer of Charleston tied for third place. Peters entered her sunlit interior photo of St. Mary of the Springs Church in Hot Springs. McGuyer submitted a photo of the prayer garden fountain at Sacred Heart in Charleston.

Honorable mentions went to photos entered by Nowell, Linda G. English of Prescott and Renee Steinpreis of Hot Springs Village.

This year’s contest attracted 17 qualified entries. Other photographers entered the contest from Atkins and Little Rock. Eligible subjects were any architectural element or detail of a Catholic church or institution in Arkansas. Photos are judged by the newspaper staff based on composition, technical quality, visual appeal and suitability for the directory cover.
