Louisiana floods worst disaster since Sandy

BATON ROUGE, La. (CNS) -- The line of destruction caused by historic flooding in southern Louisiana stretches for 25 miles, and according to Red Cross officials, it is the worst natural disaster in the United States since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Wisconsin site of Marian apparitions now a national shrine

ALLOUEZ, Wis. -- Nearly 160 years ago, on Oct. 9, 1859, Mary appeared to a young Belgian immigrant living in Kewaunee County.

Today, it is the only approved Marian apparition site in the United States. On Aug. 15, the feast of the Assumption, the U.S. bishops formally designated the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion as a national shrine.

Attention, wealth can never satisfy our thirst for God

Walking out of the parking garage, I stopped to take in the view of Busch Stadium in St. Louis. All I could see was bright red and green under the blue sky; it was beautiful. I witnessed the finest in baseball competing at the highest level. I’ve been before, but this day was exceptional because of how I’ve been drawn into major league baseball. My wife, Andrea, will reunite with her cousin and together we will watch her son, Atlanta Braves pitcher Michael Foltynewicz, take the mound to face the Cardinals. (Columns)

Refugees overcame biggest Olympic hurdles

They will not bring home the gold medals of U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, nor will they inspire the roar of the crowd at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the same way as legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Nonetheless, the members of the new Refugee Olympic Team deserve their own laurels for overcoming significant obstacles in life as well as for their athletic pursuits in Brazil. (Guest commentary)
