The superintendent of Catholic schools in Arkansas announced Feb. 27 that she would retire June 30 after 16 years of leadership in the Diocese of Little Rock.

Vernell Bowen is celebrating 25 years in Catholic schools, including nine years as principal of St. Edward School in Little Rock.

In a letter to her coworkers, she said, "As stated in Ecclesiastes Chapter 3: 'To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose.'  I feel I have had many seasons in my life and with God’s help and guidance I will be entering into a new season. I do not have any set plans for retirement other than a little travel time with my husband and working on some projects around my home. I ask for your prayers as I enter into this new journey."
