On Saturday, March 11, Subiaco Academy’s Quiz Bowl earned first place in the senior high school regionals in Prairie Grove.
Axel Ntamatungiro, Jesus Calvillo, Andy Davis, Vinny Nguyen, Haegen Hess and Braeden Hess beat Gravette (300-255), Pea Ridge (510-145), Huntsville (380-160), Prairie Grove (425-150) and Berryville (375-90) in a round robin-style tournament. In addition to coming in first, Ntamantungiro was named the tournament MVP award by scoring an average of 160 points a game.
How well the students did was also noticed by organizers. It is very rare for a team to score 500 or above in a game. Last year during the state tournament in Dover the boys came close to hitting this target but missed it by 10 points. (A 500+ game is analogous to pitching a no-hitter in baseball).
Winning the tournament allows the team to travel to the state tournament April 1 in Dardanelle.
