Seven eighth-grade girls from St. Joseph High School in Conway attended the Girl Power in STEM Conference at the University of Central Arkansas April 28. Girls from across the state gained hands-on experience and learned about careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The girls interacted with female professors and current UCA students to develop a greater understanding of their own potential and power at a time in their lives when girls tend to lose interest in STEM fields. The featured speaker was Dr. Amber Straughn, who grew up on a farm in Bee Branch and is now an astrophysicist at NASA.
