Three new principals step in with start of school year

New faces take over in front office of Subiaco, Paris and Rogers Catholic schools

Julie Rochester, St. Joseph, Paris (interim)

  • Hometown: Cecil, Ark. (between Charleston and Ozark)

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in education, University of Central Arkansas; master’s degree in education, Arkansas State University and numerous post-graduate hours in music and education

  • Educational experience: since 1976 music teacher and band director and various other positions at Ozark School District, Arkansas Department of Education, St. Joseph School in Paris, University  of Arkansas Fort Smith, County Line School District, Westside School District and North Little Rock School District

  • Benefits of Catholic education: A Catholic education gives Catholic students (as well as non-Catholics) the opportunity to freely practice their faith while acquiring a quality education. They are able to put into practice within the school setting, all elements of their Catholic faith. This will better enable them to live a happy and productive life serving God, their families and their communities.

  • Favorite saint: Actually one of my favorites is not a saint yet, Father Solanus Casey. Pope John Paul II declared him venerable in 1992.

  • Hobbies: traveling, hiking, reading, and I am dabbling in stained glass

Matthew Stengel, Subiaco Academy

  • Hometown: Ratcliff, Ark.

  • Education: bachelor’s degrees in finance and economics and master’s degree in business administration from University of Arkansas Fayetteville

  • Educational philosophy: Boys love to be challenged and to meet high standards, not just academically but also in athletics and spiritual life. Let’s bring back heroes to emulate.

  • Benefits of Catholic education: The history of Catholic education is parallel with the foundations of western civilizations. Catholic education should produce students who are well-rounded and of exceptional quality.

  • Favorite saint: St. Joseph

  • Hobbies: reading, outdoors, cards

Karla Thielemier, St. Vincent de Paul, Rogers

  • Hometown: O’Fallon, Mo.

  • Education: bachelor’s degree from Williams Baptist College and master’s degree in education from Arkansas State University

  • Educational experience: St. Paul School, Pocahontas for 16 years (seven as principal), St. Vincent de Paul, Rogers

  • Educational philosophy: Learning is continual throughout life. The goal of education is to help students develop a love of learning, to create a secure environment that all feel free to express themselves.

  • Benefits of Catholic education: allowing Jesus Christ to be the center of everything; academic excellence

  • Favorite saint and Scripture: Mother Teresa. Luke 6:30-32: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”

  • Hobbies: outdoor sports such as boating, fishing and softball
