This photo of St. Agnes Church by Whitley Lind of Mena won first place in Arkansas Catholic’s annual contest and will appear on the cover of the 2017 Catholic Diocese of Little Rock Directory.

A low-angle view of St. Agnes Church in Mena, captured by first-time entrant Whitley Lind of Mena, won first place in Arkansas Catholic’s annual photo contest and will appear on the cover of the 2017 Catholic Diocese of Little Rock Directory.

Lind will receive photographer’s credit in the directory, a one-year subscription to Arkansas Catholic and a copy of the directory.

Second place in the contest was won by Robert C. Alexander of Little Rock, who submitted his photo of a Divine Mercy painting prominent in the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock.

Joan Dobry of North Little Rock, also a first-time entrant, won third place with a photo of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in the Marche community of North Little Rock.

Honorable mention went to a photo entered by Paul McGuyer of Charleston. All contest winners also receive a certificate of award.

This year’s contest attracted 11 qualified entries, including the first entry known to have been taken from a flying drone. Other photographers entered the contest from Fort Smith and Searcy.

The contest, which closes in March each year, is open to any Arkansas resident age 18 or older. Photos are judged by the newspaper staff based on composition, technical quality, visual appeal and suitability for the directory cover.

The 2017 Diocese of Little Rock Directory, a comprehensive listing of all diocesan offices and staff, Catholic agencies and organizations, parishes, schools, clergy and religious, will be released in late September.
