Catholics not obliged to attend Mass if weather prevents it

Published: December 26, 2016

As the potential for inclement weather increases, Father Andrew Hart, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish in Fayetteville who is studying canon law through the Catholic University of America, has this reminder about Catholics’ obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

“An obligation only obliges if one is able to fulfill it,” he said. “Thus, if one cannot — in good judgment — make the determination that it is safe and possible to journey to Mass, then one is excused from the obligation.”

Father Hart said Catholics should make an effort to read the Mass readings (usccb.org/bible/readings is a good resource), take time to meditate upon God’s word and make a spiritual communion.
