Deacon Mathew Joseph Post, 97, a member of St. Mary Church in Altus, died Oct. 20. Post was a member of the diocese’s first diaconate class of 1981.
As the president of Post Familie Winery, his family's name is widely known around the state. When asked what he did, Post replied, "I raise grapes." When he was an active deacon, his primary parish ministry was taking Communion to the sick and shut-ins every Friday morning.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Marie “Betty” Duerr Post; seven sons, Matthew Post Jr. of Russellville, Peter Post of Morrilton, Thomas Post of Harrison, and Paul Post, Andrew Post, John Post and Joseph Post, all of Altus; five daughters, Agnes Marie “Amy” Sexton of Altus, Rosemary Post of Little Rock, Suzanne Post of Altus, and Elizabeth Christina “Tina” Post Lyons and Jacqueline Scalise, both of Fayetteville; 43 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren.
