Arkansas Catholic brought home six awards from the Catholic Press Association. During the annual Catholic Media Conference in Green Bay June 15, editor Malea Hargett got three writing awards: first place for best pro-life coverage for small weekly newspapers, honorable mention for feature writing for small weekly newspapers and shared a third-place award with associate editor Aprille Hanson for best reporting on ecumenical and interfaith issues.
For her first-place coverage of the executions in April 2017, the judges said, “The stories of execution are gruesome and told with detail. Yet telling them is a moral imperative borne by the author and paper that effectively expands the Church’s pro-life teaching.”
Associate editor Aprille Hanson also earned second place for best reporting on young adults.
Production manager Emily Roberts earned first place for the best promotional house ad for the newspaper’s 2017 circulation campaign.
The judges said, “This ad offers a compelling value proposition that is creatively reflected in the design. It elicits the desire to experience the product it promotes.”
Website director Tara Little earned third place for best diocesan website.
