Christ the King School in Fort Smith celebrated its 70th anniversary Jan. 26 with a special children’s Mass, followed by a reception and tours of the school.
Marilyn Hamm Self, who co-chaired the event with development director Katie Kratzberg, said the school held its first anniversary celebration 10 years ago. Display boards in the school gymnasium were filled with photos and memorabilia that had been stored from the 60th anniversary and gleaned from the school’s new alumni page.
The anniversary committee cooked up a special treat for the guests: former cafeteria manager Barbara Adams’ famous cinnamon rolls.
Some of the visitors were new to the school, having sent their children to St. Boniface School until it closed last summer.
“The school expanded its campus twice while I was teaching,” Self said. “There are so many more offerings, academic and social, than when I was a student. We didn’t have computers and didn’t have special music, art, choir, and physical education classes, but the most important things — a Christ-centered education and a caring school community — have always and will always be part of our school’s history.”
