St. Paul Parish in Pocahontas recently recognized parishioner Joe Bergman on his 85th birthday. For the last 20 years, following his retirement, Bergman has been dedicated to serving his parish.
He volunteers his time and labor year round to maintain approximately eight acres around St. Paul Church, St. Paul School and St. Paul Cemetery. He bought lawn mowers and other equipment needed with his own money, never accepting money for gas.
At age 85, Bergman willingly helps others when asked, such as working on lawn mowers or yard work. He regularly checks on friends and classmates and also takes people to doctor appointments. He has also driven retired priests to other states as needed. He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus and ushers at Mass every Saturday evening.
