Young Faith Essay Contest

Arkansas Catholic has chosen five finalists in its Young Faith Essay Contest for the Year of Faith.

Catholic high school juniors and seniors were asked to reflect on this Scripture: “But the Lord answered me, Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.” (Jeremiah 1:7)

Finalist essays will be published in the newspaper and here through April 6. Readers had an opportunity to vote for their favorite essay on Arkansas Catholic’s Facebook page April 11-24. Reader votes will be considered as the judges choose the winning essay to be announced May 11 at the Catholic Youth Ministry convention in Little Rock.

I am ready and waiting to follow God’s will

By Laurie Nick, Published: April 9, 2013

Jeremiah 1:7 states, “But the Lord answered me, Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.” Am I ‘too young?” Inexperience is no obstacle as a young person may be timid in following the Lord. If we say we are not ready, he will reassure us that he has been preparing us and has a plan for our lives as he knows More...

Challenged to listen to God, follow his path

By Katherine Penney, Published: March 23, 2013

Jeremiah 1:7 says, “But the Lord answered me, Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak.” This passage strikes fear, anger, joy and question into me. I have read this passage over and over again; each time I feel something different spark inside me. I guess one could say that I’m challenged by my Savior in this verse, but only through this More...

Lord, guide me, lead me where I need to go

Taylor Wilkerson, Published: March 11, 2013

My God, you know that I am so often frustrated. Because I am a teenager, many people look at me and assume that because I am young I have nothing worthwhile to contribute. They see my stress and anxiety as the typical annoying signs of a teenager who still needs to grow up, and they tell me at every turn that I can’t do this or that because I am somehow still too young. Sometimes, Master, More...

Young Catholics with faith discover themselves

By Rachel Zimmerman, Published: February 22, 2013

I am a cradle Catholic, born and raised at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in North Little Rock. I would be lying if I said I’ve never taken my faith for granted. I would be lying if I said I’ve never had doubts or struggles. We all would. But God knows this, and he has a plan for all of our hard times. I feel personally challenged by Jeremiah 1:7, and personally called. As a senior More...

Supporting peers, volunteering can change the world

By Alexa Gates, Published: February 8, 2013

“Jesus Christ is my only spouse; he is more splendid than the sun and the stars,” she exclaimed, rejecting Procop’s proposal for marriage. Procop, the son of the governor, was so outraged by her rejection, that he brought her to the governor and accused her of being a Christian. The governor pleaded with the beautiful, innocent girl by offering her gifts to deny God. She genuinely refused. Angered by her virtue, the governor ordered her to More...
