Collection to benefit missionary efforts

Published: February 17, 2007

A special collection will again be taken up on Ash Wednesday to support the missionary work of priests, religious and lay people serving Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians and other Catholics in Arkansas.

The annual collection will take place Feb. 21 at all Masses in the Diocese of Little Rock.

Last year about $103,000 was contributed through the Ash Wednesday Collection, all of which went directly to ministry expenses.

"The proceeds from this collection enable us to maintain and continue certain ministry activities that would be difficult, if not impossible, to support any other way," said Msgr. J. Gaston Hebert, diocesan administrator, in a Jan. 21 letter to pastors and pastoral administrators about the collection.

"Return to the Lord With Your Whole Heart" is theme of this year's Ash Wednesday collection. It is taken from Joel 2:12-18, the first reading on Ash Wednesday.

Additional donations may sent to: Ash Wednesday Collection, c/o Cheryl Smith, Diocese of Little Rock, 2500 North Tyler St., Little Rock, AR 72207.
