Father Warren Harvey presents the Daniel Rudd Award to Jewell H. Baker, a member of St. Peter Church in Pine Bluff, at the conclusion of the 22nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mass at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock.
The award is given annually by the Diocesan Council for Black Catholics to a black layperson who has contributed to his or her church and community. The retired school teacher was honored for being a member of the Altar Rosary Society and assisting with RCIA and first Communion classes.
"She is a humble servant in the Church," Verdell Bunting, DCBC president said.
Baker accepted the award with her usual quiet demeanor. "This has been a great day for me. I am going to graciously accept this award. I promise I will cherish it to the end of my life."
