Literacy night

St. John School in Russellville hosted its first Family Literacy Night March 4. The event was organized to help students and families celebrate the joy of reading.

When families signed in, students received a passport with activities to complete during the evening. Teachers featured stations in their classrooms that were themed around Dr. Seuss books. Some activities included games and crafts, while others focused on phonics and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) projects. Audiobooks were played so the students could hear the stories while they participated in activities related to the story.

“We also provided families with activity sheets to work on together, and at the end of the night the students went home with an ‘I Love Reading’ goody bag,” said ELA teacher Miranda Holman.

For dinner, families enjoyed hot dogs, chips and cotton candy, and students signed up for a Book Fair giveaway.

“There were a ton of great responses from parents and students as they navigated from room to room listening to the stories and participating in the activities,” Holman said. “We had such a great turnout with more than half of our students showing up.”
